Gorgeous leather dog leads made by the tribes people of Kenya and partially hand beaded at each end of the lead in various Masai designs and colours.
'Earth' is made with shades of brown, black, white and gold coloured beads, 'Bright' is multi-coloured, 'Sky' features shades of gold and browns with sky blue and 'Pastel' has soft pinks, yellows, oranges, greens and blues and 'Pride' is very proud indeed! All in various patterns and designs. Or go for stripes in blues or reds. No lead is ever the same.
Masai people have beaded necklaces and wristbands for decades to tell a story of the wearer, their social and marital status, age and key events in their life.
The Masai women handcraft each individual lead using quality dark brown leather which they adorn with a colourful beaded pattern on each end of the lead. Every piece is individually handcrafted using high quality and hard-wearing leather and hand-cast buckles and clasps.
These leads are 44 inches long (approx 3.5 foot) and available in two widths (except Pride which, due to the design, is only available in 3/4" width). The 1/2" lead, with its smaller buckle and clasp, is designed for use with toy breeds and small dogs (collars up to 13 inches). The 3/4" wide lead is for medium and large dogs (collars from 14 inches) and also suits the hound collars. For safety reasons please choose a lead width that matches the collar width.
Important - the bead colours and designs vary greatly from lead to lead and from those pictured. The images simply give an idea of the colours of the beads used and the variety of designs. The Maasai women are given total free range to express their artistic flair on each and every design, to encourage and safe guard the integrity of their culture. This is the beauty of the product offering. These are not mass produced identical products.
Matching collars also available.
Treat the leather well and it will grow even more beautiful with age. To clean, rinse in warm water then treat with Neatsfoot Oil for waterproofing or saddle soap. This will keep the leather healthy and supple. Avoid contact with salt (sea) water and chemicals (e.g. cleaning products, flea treatments).
